In 2010 there were 12 recorded hurricanes, 5 ranked as category 3 or higher. That makes 2010 the second most active hurricane year in recorded history. The kicker - not a single single hurricane made landfall in the US. In over a century - since at least 1900 - there has been no other Atlantic hurricane season, that has seen ten or more hurricanes, in which not one struck the US. On average hurricanes cause 20 deaths per year and account for about $5.1 billion in damages. Hurricane Katrina, a category 3 storm was the deadliest since 1928 claiming the lives of 1833 people and was the most expensive with property damage of $125.0 billion.
